The inside of the cover, with initial internal repairs along the edges, corners, and spine. There were many different shades of white and yellow due to the acidification of the paper, so managing the color buildup from the toned tissue was very important.
Corner repair as seen from the outside.
A progression of the repairs made to the back cover.
The spine was rebuilt using three layers of toned 18 gsm tissue—one overlapping the edges on the interior face, one as a shaped infill to the lost spine area, and a final layer overlapping the exterior face of the cover. The boards were replaced with archival board. Small internal corner mounts were added to provide stability and minimize the movement these boards can have in the future.
